KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 (Bernama) -- The eight-stage Tour of Malaysia (Jelajah Malaysia or JM 2009) that flags off on April 19, offering increased prize money, has attracted 20 teams, including 15 from overseas.
Organising committee chairman Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz of Ten Speed Events Sdn. Bhd said the third edition organised by his company, would feature about 120 world class riders.
"The 2.2 status JM 2009 will have two category One mountain climbs, namely at the Titiwangsa Mountain range and Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands. "We have also increased the prize money from RM245,000 last year to RM280,000 this year, to raise the standard of the tour," said Astaman at a ceremony to announce the routes for the eight stages, here Tuesday.
The Tour that was supposed to be held in January was postponed due to lack of sponsors but according to Astaman, sponsors had come on board to assist in staging the Tour successfully.
He added that the local challenge would be led by Le Tua, National Team, MNCF Team, Terengganu and Armed Forces teams while the foreign teams would include last year's overall team classification winner Giant Asia Racing Team from Taiwan.
This year's Tour would comprise 1,240km, starting at Kuala Selangor on April 19, before moving on to Perak, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang before drawing down the curtains with the criterium event in Kuala Lumpur on April 26.
Among the stages identified are Stage 1: Kuala Selangor - Ipoh (176.8km), Stage 2: Ipoh - Sungai Petani (192.7km), Stage 3: Gerik - Tanah Merah (172.7km), Stage 4: Pasir Mas - Kuala Terengganu (177.5km), Stage 5: Kuala Terengganu - Kuantan (199.5km), Stage 6: Kuantan - Bera (134km), Stage 7: Tanjung Malim - Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands (116km), Stage 8: Kuala Lumpur Criterium (70.4km)
