KUALA LUMPUR: In the celebration of the its tenth team, continental team from USA Jelly Belly Pro Cycling Team makes their debut in Jelajah Malaysia 2009 which will be held from 19th to 26th of this coming April.
JM09 Executive Chairman Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz said that the team line-up will consists of outstanding riders such as Bernard Van Ulden and Kel Reijnen to prove its might in the race of 1,240km.
"We welcome the team’s debut and hope that with their presence will spruce up the challenge and excitement in the race of a total of RM280, 000.00 up for grabs.”
"The team has won some stages in the Tour of Hainan and Tour of Elk Grove last year and for sure local cycling enthusiasts will look forward to see how well the team will adapt to the climate here in Malaysia as well as proving their might in the race."
He said that Van Ulden, 30, a time trialist, was with team Navigators previously in 2007 and won the fifth stage of Tour de Toona (2006) and also in third place in the Elite USA National Time Trial Championship.
Astaman also said that Reijnen who was a rider from Waste Management Cycling Team is a part of team development for Jelly Belly are among those to look out for as the 23-year rider won fifth place overall in the Tour of Hainan last year.
"This team will also feature Charles Huff, a 30-year old sprinter who won three stages in the previous Tour of Hainan and for sure Huff will pose a threat to Anuar Manan who will be defending the sprint jersey."
Jelly Belly Pro Cycling Team line-up will also comprise of Matthew Rice (Australia), Matthew Crane (USA) and Will Routley (Canada).
Jelajah Malaysia 2009 organized by Ten Speed Events Sdn Bhd will feature an eight-stage race starting from Kuala Selangor to Ipoh, stage 2 (Ipoh - Sungai Petani), stage 3 (Gerik - Tanah Merah), stage 4 (Pasir Mas - Kuala Terengganu), stage 5 (Kuala Terengganu - Kuantan), stage 6 (Kuantan - Bera), peringkat tujuh (Tanjung Malim-Genting) and will end in stage 8 of criterium race in Dataran Merdeka.
The race of 2.2 categorization by International Cycling Union (UCI) are one of tours in calendar of UCI Asian Tour.
