KUALA LUMPUR: Best Malaysian rider jersey winner, Suhardi Hassan hopes that Malaysian National Team will be the best overall team in Jelajah Malaysia (JM) 2009 which will commence this coming 19th April.
The rider who hails from Kangar, Perlis said that those who are riding for the national team in this upcoming JM comprise of a combination of experienced riders and the best of the lot.
Suhardi, 27, maintained the title, the best Malaysian rider ever since JM 2003 until the previous edition of JM was riding for Kuala Lumpur.
"I would not say that I would be defending the title but I do hope that one of the national riders will win it.”
"Most important is that our team is targeting to win the best overall team and hopefully gets to keep the sprint jersey and best overall rider," he stated.
The Malaysian national team comprised of Mohd Faris Abdul Razak, Muhammad Fauzan Ahmad Lutfi, Muhamad Rauf Nur Misbah, Ahmad Fallanie Ali and Wan Mohd Najmee Wan Mohd.
Suhardi added that the national team had just came back from participating in the Tour of Thailand 2009 which was held from 4th to 9th April.
"There is nothing for me to be proud of in Thailand as I was down with fever, nevertheless I managed to finished all six-stage of the race," he commented.
He also said that the Tour of Thailand was a warm-up stage for the team coached by Jamaluddin Omar before the upcoming JM 2009.
Executive Chairman Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz stated that Suhardi who had won gold medal in the road-rqace event during the SEA Games 2005 in Manila is one of the local experienced rider who is expected to a threat to jeopardize the standing of other international riders’ standing in the race.
"With his experience and capability at the climbs and flats, I am confident that this time around, Suhardi can defend the title as the best Malaysian rider and gets to win at some of the stages," he stated.
Out of 21 teams participating, 14 comprise of continental teams, which is the biggest continental teams’ participation in a 2.2 categorization race. JM 2009 of 2.2 categorization, is organized by Ten Speed Events Sdn Bhd will be held from 19th to 26th this month.
JM 2009 features a race of 8-stage with of a total distance of 1,240km, stage 1 kicking off from Kuala Selangor to Ipoh, stage 2 (Ipoh - Sungai Petani), stage 3 (Gerik - Tanah Merah), stage 4 (Pasir Mas - Kuala Terengganu), stage 5 (Kuala Terengganu - Kuantan), stage 6 (Kuantan - Bera), stage 7 (Tanjung Malim - Genting) and ends in a Criterium race at Dataran Merdeka.
