BERA: Aisan Racing rider Taiji Nishitani was in the lead for the first time this year as he conquered stage 6 Jelajah Malaysia (JM) 2009 today.
"Today I got my first win this year after being the second to finish in four stages of Tour of Taiwan last month," he mentioned during the press conference today.
The 28-year old attributes his win today to Nana Watarai, the team coordinator who celebrates her birthday today.
"Frankly speaking I am happy and contented to lead the finish as the Australian rider proved to be quite a challenge. However I managed to track him and sprint to the finish," Nishitani quoted.
Nishitani recorded 2hours 52minutes and 3seconds in the race of 134km undulating route from Kuantan to Bera. Savings & Loan Cycling rider Joel Pearson in second whilst Ride Sport Racing, Shaun McCarthy in third.
As for the Iranian rider Mehdi Sohrabi of team Tabriz Petrochemical he kept his grip tight onto the yellow and green jerseys as best overall rider and sprint king.
"I will work hard for the team tomorrow to ensure that yellow jersey stays with Tabriz Petrochemical," he quoted as he accumulated 20 points in the sprint classification today.
Another Iranian rider Abbas Saeditanha of Azad University kept his hold to the red polka dot jersey said that he will strive hard to keep the KOM jersey at the climb stage in Genting tomorrow.
Meanwhile white jersey keeper Suhardi Hassan of the national Malaysian team said that his team has come up with a strategy to tighten his hold of the white jersey in tomorrow’s Stage 7 JM2009.
He said that today fellow rider Wan Mohd Najmee Wan Mohd worked really hard to breakaway as early as km60 and held his position well in the first bunch to the finish.
Up to now Azad University is still in the lead followed by Tabriz Petrochemical and Savings & Loan Cycling in second and third placing respectively.
Stage 7 which will start tomorrow from Tanjung Malim to Genting is the most important stage to determine overall standing in JM 2009.
Rider will have to go through another three sprint zones in Batang Kali, Serendah and Sungai Tua before pedalling thru three climb zones in Templer Park, Empangan Batu finally in Genting of 925m above sea level.
JM 2009 organised by Ten Speed Events Sdn Bhd features 21 teams comprise of Malaysian National Team, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia B, LeTua Cycling Team, Terengganu Toshiba-Bike Labz, Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM), Jelly Belly Cycling Team (USA), Azad University Continental Team (Iran), Savings & Loan Cycling Team (Australia), Shimano Racing Team (Japan), Polygon Sweetnice Team (Indonesia), Tabriz Petrochemical Team (Iran), Aisan Racing Team (Japan), Ride Sport Racing (Australia), Giant Asia Cycling Team (Taiwan), Bridgestone Anchor (Japan), Trek Marco Polo Cycling Team (China), Doha Team (Qatar), Tinelli Colossi Cycling (New Zealand) dan JazySports Beacon (Phillipines).
JM 2009 is an eight-stage race of 1,240km in total distance with Stage 1 starting from Kuala Selangor to Ipoh, Stage 2 (Ipoh - Sungai Petani), Stage 3 (Gerik - Tanah Merah), Stage 4 (Pasir Mas - Kuala Terengganu), Stage 5 (Kuala Terengganu - Kuantan), Stage 6 (Kuantan - Bera), Stage 7 (Tanjung Malim - Genting) before ending the race in a Criterium race in Dataran Merdeka.
