KUALA SELANGOR
The first stage of Jelajah Malaysia 2009 will be from Kuala Selangor to Ipoh thru tanjung Karang, Sekinchan, Sungai Besar, Sabak Bernam, Jendarata, Teluk Intan, Mambang Diawan, Kampar and Gopeng, covering a distance of 176.8km. Kuala Selangor, which is situated about 64km from Kuala Lumpur is a destination fit for those with the likings of history, picturesque and tranquil nature and wildlife and not to forget the traditional and fresh seafood galore.
Historically, Kuala Selangor was the royal city that was invaded by the British back in 1784 right after they made their mark in Melaka. One of the historical landmarks is the 200-year old Fort Atlingburg situated at Bukit Melawati in Kuala Selangor. It served as lighthouse and also as the official residence of the District Officer during its prime.
For nature lovers, there is the Taman Alam Kuala Selangor, a forest reserve of swamps with more than 160 species of birds that made it their home. Kuala Selangor is also well known for its Kampung Kelip Kelip in Kampung Kuantan. Here, visitors get to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the fireflies in the still of the night on boats by the riverside.
In the small town of Pasir Penampang, a taste of fresh seafood is a must-have once you’re in Kuala Selangor. Kuala Selangor is also one of the hotspots for those who are into fishing.
IPOH
The stage 1 will end at the Old Ipoh Town Hall, one of the oldest landmarks here coincides with the 81st birthday of Sultan Azlan Shah, the Sultan of Perak. Stage 2 will also commence in Ipoh at the Ipoh City Hall and covers a distance of 192.7km towards Sungai Petani thru Chemor, Sungai Siput, Kuala Kangsar, Padang Rengas, Changkat Jering, Masjid Tinggi, Parit Buntar, Nibong Tebal, Kulim, Tasik Gelugor and Pinang Tunggal.
Ipoh formerly known as Paloh is known as the city of millionaires referring to the vast fortunes made during the boom of the tin mining industries and also bougainvillea city. This city is abundant with variety of delicacies. The city started of as a village near the riverbanks of the Kinta River back in the 1820s.
There are quite a number of attractions, from the infamous unfinished abandoned mansion known as Kellie’s castle, situated in Batu Gajah to the natural spring of Tambun hot spring. About 10km from Ipoh is the famous recreational park Ulu Chepor, a waterfall camping area apart from others in Lubuk Timah and Falim respectively.
The Old Town Ipoh features a number of colonial architectural wonder such as the Ipoh Train station that boasts elements of Moorish and Gothic architecture. The many shop houses along Leech Street also maintains its architectural significance apart from being the hotspots for food and beverages.
Ipoh is particularly famous for its food such as Chicken Rice, Char Hor Fun, Dim Sum, Hakka Mee and many more. Varieties of Chinese delicacies apart from Malay and Indian delicacies for sure are not to be missed! Ipoh is also famous for its coffee. As many small coffee shops remains in the Ipoh old town, the coffee from Ipoh is given the moniker ‘old town white coffee’. Famous eateries in Ipoh are the Wooley Food Centre in Ipoh Garden, Old Town Food Centre at Leech Street, Food Bazaar at Jalan Gopeng and at Jalan Datuk Tahwil Azhar.
