SUNGAI PETANI

Stage 2 will end at the Clock Tower Square located on the main street, Jalan Ibrahim. The clocktower is the major landmark of Sungai Petani. The clock tower was built in 1936. It is 12.1 m in height. It is topped by a dome-shaped structure. The tower was a present from Lm Lean Teng to George V and Queen Mary to commemorate the Silver Jubilee.

Situated about 30km in the northern part of Sungai Petani is the infamous Gunung Jerai. It is one of the favourite destinations for nature lovers and historians alike. Gunung Jerai stands at 1217 above sea level making it the tallest mountain in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. It is a navigational point for ships entering the Straits of Melaka as it is visible from afar.

An 18km trekking route and a resort in the vicinity of cooling tall waterfalls atop of Gunung Jerai provide the serenity of nature from the hectic life in town for those who are in need of total relaxation. There is also a ruin of a Hindu temple atop of the mountain. It was built nearly a thousand years ago during the peak of the Lembah Bujang civilization.

Being the only beach in the mainland Kedah, Pantai Merdeka boasts various accommodations and seafood for beach goers. The beach is also the entry point to island activities for Pulau Bidan and Pulau Telor. These attractions also attract fishing fans apart from the many lakes, streams and rivers in Sungai Petani.

Another seafood spot in Sungai Petani is Tanjung Dawai. Located 30 minutes from Sungai Petani, it has about twenty seafood restaurants. Tanjung Dawai is all about varieties of good, fresh seafood at an unbelievably dirt-cheap price. It is surely a bargain not to be missed once you set foot in Sungai Petani!
