GERIK

Stage 3 will be a race of 172.7km from Gerik to Tanah Merah thru Tasik Temenggor, Titiwangsa, Jeli and Bukit Bunga. Gerik was founded as early as the 1870s when a number of people from Pattani via Hangai River made their settlement deep in the jungle. The place got its name from the gritting sound of hundreds of rodents eating the roots of bamboo thus the name Kampung Gerit. It got its name when Tuan Jagong went on a hunting trip at Gunung Tujuh near Kuala Kenderong and as the entourage approached the settlements he heard the gritting sound. By 1901, Gerik became the headquarters of the Hulu Perak district and tin mining made the village grew into a small town.

Gerik has quite a number of attractions that boasts the serenity of the jungles and crystal clear waterfalls in its vicinity. 290,000 hectare of forest reserve widely known as Hutan Belum is open to the public and researchers alike. The Royal Belum is for those nature lovers who are into eco-tourism activities. Pulau Banding is the main tourism hub of the Hulu Perak district. It is the entry point to all tourist destinations of the Temenggor Lake and the Royal Belum.

Rivers and waterfalls are abundant in Gerik. Lata Pinang, situated 25 minutes from Gerik via the Gerik-Kupang Highway and about 20 minutes of gravel route. It boasts a natural three level waterfalls and the environment is totally untouched by development. Lata Ulu Lawin, situated 25km from Gerik is another place to be if you’re into picnic, camping and other nature-related activities.

For those who are into fishing, Dataran Kuala Rui is not to be missed. It is the built to cater for Luma fishing. The unique thing about the Luma fish is that it can only be catched during flood season and also in August. During that month a fishing-festival is held at the Dataran Kuala Rui. The Luma fishes head to Kuala Rui from the Perak River for breeding hence the festival. Apart from this location, Dataran Pengkalan Buaya is another hotspot for fishing enthusiasts!

TANAH MERAH

Stage 3 will end at Tanah Merah. Tanah Merah literally means Red Earth or Laterite is the second biggest town in the state of Kelantan in northeast Malaysia. The capital and main town is Bandar Tanah Merah where is situated nearby Sungai Kelantan.

Historically it used to be a kingdom called Chi Tu. The Chinese Sui Dynasty annals of the 7th century describe an advanced kingdom called Chi Tu ("Red Earth") in the area now called Kelantan. Being in the spot by the Kelantan River, the landscape is highly influenced by it, which supplies the much-needed water for its agriculture plantations.

Tanah Merah is best for experiencing the ‘kampung’ lifestyle. Nasi Lemak Tok Wan Ali is a must as it is not only tasty but also cheap. There are varieties of food here at Tanah Merah. Basically Kelantanese delicacies are extremely sweet in nature. Nasi Kerabu, Laksam, Nasi Tumpang, Solok Lada, Lompat Tikam, Taik Itek and Nasi Dagang are the must-haves delicacies once you arrived in Kelantan!

For those who are looking for cheap, local products, they can go to Bukit Bunga. There is a variety choices of clothes, house equipment and food, and customers are expected to bargain for better prices when shopping.
