Stage 5 will be from Syahbandar Square, Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan thru Marang, Merchang, Rantau Abang, Dungun, Paka, Kertih, Chukai, Cherating and Beserah, covering a distance of 199.5 making it the longest stage in Jelajah Malaysia 2009.
Kuala Terengganu is the largest city as well as the state and royal capital of Terengganu. The settlement was established in the 15th century by a family of Chinese traders and when it was first found, there was only one street called Kampung Cina.
There are quite a number of attractions in Kuala Terengganu. For those who are into shopping, a visit to Pasar Payang will prove to be of utmost pleasure. The double storey market place houses all sorts of things for sale, from poultry to fresh fruits, meats and fishes to utensils and bed sheets all at a price that can be bargained to be cheaper than it should be, as long as you know the trade of bargaining.
Keropok or crackers made from fish or prawn, asam, local made candies and snacks are sold in stalls beside the entrance too. Look for one special cracker, Keropok Belinjau that is made from a kind of gnetum called Belinjau (gnetum gnenom).
Bukit Puteri, a 173-year old fortress, which is only a few steps away from Pasar Payang. Under the reign of Sultan Baginda Omar, it served as a defensive fortress as well as his residence back in 1870s. Best time to visit the fort in the morning or evening time when temperature is not too extreme. From the platform at the top, you can see fishing boat coming back home after a hard day at the sea. To the other side, you have a panoramic view of Kuala Terengganu.
Seberang Takir can be accessed via a 5-minute boat ride thru the waterfront besides Pasar Payang. Seberang Takir has lots of interesting thing to be discovered. Most of the villagers in Kampung Hujung Tanjung earn their living from cottage industry in producing the famous Terengganu Keropok Lekor (a kind of fish cracker), batik printing, and drying salted fish under the sun, all by manual. Another dish not to be missed is Nasi Dagang.
Kuala Terengganu also boasts quite a number of architectural wonder such as the Tengku Tengah Zahara Mosque, better known as the Floating Mosque. Built on a platform and combining both modern and Moorish architecture design, the mosque symbolizes the innovation and modernisation in the state.
About 1km from the city centre, a stroll by the Pantai Batu Buruk under the breeze of the South China Sea would do much for those in the need to wind down. The white sandy beach and pine trees along the beaches can be the best appreciated in the evening while enjoying the sunset by the beach.
