KUANTAN

Stage 6 will be from Kuantan to Bera thru Gambang, Paya Bungor,, Seri Jaya, Maran, Temerloh and Mengkarak covering a distance of 134km.

Being the city with the most beaches in its vicinity, Kuantan is known as a tropical getaway, one of its major economic activities is tourism. Domestically, it is famous for the production of handicrafts, batik, keropok (dried fish crackers) and salted fish. Kuantan serves as the administrative and commercial capital of Pahang. It is also the biggest city on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

5km from the North East of Kuantan is the well-known beach, Teluk Chempedak. Complete with arrays of accommodation and water sports facilities, the beach is always crowded in the weekends and sunrise can be enjoyed at ease with the presence of a 24-7 McDonald’s at the venue. For those who are into wind-surfing, Balok is the place to be at located about 13km North of Kuantan. For a more private outing, Batu Hitam would be the best choice as it is still undisturbed and its name derived from the black stones along the beach.

The search for fresh seafood is made easier here in Kuantan as Beserah is famous for its fresh fish sold at a price to be bargained for! Tanjung Lumpur is another venue famous for its arrays of seafood delicacies. It is a place frequented by locals and tourists especially for dinner.

BERA

Bera was once considered as problematic area due to illegal land exploration, but over the years it emerged as an important district especially in the agriculture sector. Bera district is renown for Lake Bera, a freshwater lake and its surrounding wetlands that has been protected under the Ramsar Convention since November 1994.

Being the larger of two natural lakes in the Peninsular of Malaysia, Lake Bera is the largest natural lake in Malaysia. Its biodiversity made it home to 94 fish species, approximately 200 bird species; and endangered reptilian species such as the Malayan False Gharial (a freshwater, fish-eating crocodile), the totally protected Striped Giant Soft-Shelled Turtle, the much sought after Malayan Giant Turtle, reticulated pythons that can grow to a length of 18feet, prehistoric looking monitor lizards and lots of frogs species.

The highlight for most visitors to Bera is a visit to the Semelai villages. The Semelai people call themselves Semaq Tasik (the lake people) and have been living in the lake area; working on the land - planting crops such as paddy, bananas, tapioca, sugarcane etc for over 600 years. They were accomplished forest farmers, practicing the age-old method of shift cultivation.

A 5-6 hour trip and visit to Kg Jelawat at Pos Iskandar via small flat-bottomed boat through the labyrinth of Pandanus swamp is only available during the monsoon season between November and February when the tide is high enough for boats to traverse as the lake is shallow most of the time.
