TANJUNG MALIM

Tanjung Malim marks the start of stage 7 covering a distance 116km of thru Kalumpang, Kerling, Kuala Kubu Baru, Rawang, Bukit Lagong, Batu Caves, Tasik Batu and Ulu Yam Baru towards the end of the stage at Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands.

Tanjung Malim is approximately 70 km North of Kuala Lumpur via the North-South Highway. It lies on the border of Perak-Selangor state, with Sungai Bernam serving as the natural divider. Tanjong Malim is a rather sleepy town. Most Malaysian would only recall this town as a stop-over rest area during long haul travels between Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur.

About 20km from Tanjung Malim is Slim River, which was the military strategic mid-point from North to South of Malaya during World War II. It was the site of a major battle during World War II between the Japanese and British forces, which consisted of troops from India, Australia and Great Britain. The British lost the Battle of Slim River to the Japanese forces, who were equipped with tanks. The Japanese also had total air superiority. In their defeat at Slim River, the British suffered heavy casualties and many units were cut off from their line of retreat. The battle effectively ended British hopes of defending Malaya.

The nearest waterfall from Tanjung Malim is at Sungai Bil, which is famous among the locals for a weekend getaway. There are some nice spots along the waterfall for family recreation and camping.

At Ulu Slim, about the same distance from Slim River to Sungai Bil, there is a hot spring, and it is expected that the local government will develop the place, into a recreation area, for families. The water is 104C and is reputed to be the 5th hottest hot spring in the world.

Tanjung Malim boasts quite a number of delicacies. Tanjong Malim Yik Mun Pau is popular among the locals and a must-have here at Tanjung Malim. It is reputed to be one of the best pau in the country. Restaurant Naz caters a popular taste of Southern delicacies. Another venue is Gani Restaurant, which is the best place for good Indian and Malay food since from 1943.

GENTING HIGHLANDS

Genting Highlands was founded by the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong in the late 1960s. It is known as the Las Vegas of Malaysia, dubbed the "City of Entertainment" as it is the only legal land-based casino in Malaysia, run by Resorts World Bhd, a division of the renowned Genting Group.

The resort, Genting Highlands Resort, also features many hotels owned by Genting subsidiaries including Awana Genting, First World Hotel, Genting Hotel, Highlands Hotel, Resort Hotel and Theme Park Hotel. Facilities in this resort include two theme parks, a Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum, a wind-turbine sky diving simulator, golf courses and shopping malls. In 2006,2007,2008, Guinness World Records listed the First World Hotel as the world's largest hotel with a total of 8,118 rooms.

Genting Highlands is also home to a 100 million year old forest. Genting Highlands enjoys a spring-like climate, with temperatures no higher than 25°C and rarely falling below 14°C yearly. The temperature in Genting Highlands ranges from 16°C to 24°C all year round.
